Alex Moon is not the enemy. Six months after Pearl Harbor's tragedy, Korean American Alex Moon is sent away from his home in California for refusing his father's request to join the fight against the Japanese. On his journey, Alex is attacked and stranded in the small town of River Bluff, Indiana. To everyone else, he looks like the enemy. Unexpectedly, Alex is befriended by a local girl, Lonnie Hamilton, who comes to his defense, saving him from doubt and despair while placing herself in the cross hairs of prejudice. Alex falls in love with his ally---a love that is clearly forbidden. Torn between his dual identities, Korean and American, and grappling with how everyone sees him, Alex must wage the war within himself---of defending who he is, resolving his tortured feelings about the war, and fighting for the woman he loves.

Six months ago the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and life changed for many people. Alex Moon, a California native with Korean Ancestry is encouraged by his father to join up immediately to fight the Japanese. But Alex has seen what the American people have done to the Japanese-American citizens and refuses his father's request. Because of this, Alex's father sends him on a train to his uncle in Washington, DC. Alex gets off on a train stop in the small town of River Bluff, Indiana only to be accosted and beaten up by locals who see the enemy in Alex's skin color. After being shipped to the police station, Reverend Hicks and his niece, Lonnie Hamilton come to check on Alex and offer him some kindness. Alex finds himself stuck in River Bluff and seeks out a friendship Lonnie. However, the rest of the town is determined to see Alex as one of the men that is fighting their sons overseas. Tensions mount in the small town as Alex and Lonnie's friendship grows into something more. Alex must face his identity as a Korean and American as well as his family's wishes for him.

The War Between Us is a wartime romance that will sweep you off your feet. This is a sweet and clean romance that develops into something much more as the prejudices of an entire town are brought to light. Alex and Lonnie's characters are what brought me into the story and kept me interested. On the surface, this is a simple love story. However, both Lonnie and Alex are complex characters with intriguing stories. From Alex I learned about the feelings and prejudices that Korean and Chinese Americans went through after the Pearl Harbor as well as the complexity of emotions he faced when dealing with people who despised him for what they believed him to be. I did enjoy learning about some Korean customs and food as Alex introduced his culture to Lonnie. Lonnie was also an amazing character who faced a different adversity of not living up to what others had planned for her. Lonnie's grows a lot during the story as her mind shifts and realizes that you can not choose who you love.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.
I wanted to like this book but there is just too much racism that is never called out for what it is. Alex, who is Korean, is continuously called a "Jap", and while I understand that this is the point of the story, the racism is never confronted. The minister never calls out his racist congregation, Lonnie never cuts loose her deadbeat racist "friends", Tunnie is allowed to act like a complete racist pig and Lonnie never puts her in check. Oh, and about the minister; he basically tells Alex not to hang around Lonnie because it will "Ruin her reputation". Since when was it OK for a Christian Pastor to bend to the opinions of others? The book did not show anyone of strong moral conviction and character. It's as though Lonnie and the minister wee trying to help everyone get along or keep the peace. When someone is brutally attacked, called racial slurs, threatened, and provoked into a fight, a person who has any type of integrity would make a strong stand against it. If Lonnie and the minister were supposed to be an example of what's right, then that's a pretty low standard. The minister never comforted Alex and validated Alex as an equal. He never told Alex that he was ashamed of how the white people were acting. He was never embarrassed and appalled by his congregations hateful behavior. Lonnie was not sickened by it either. I'm sorry, but if I had a family member who was that full of hate, I would have to leave. How could Lonnie continue to have any type of relationship with her sister, knowing that she is an outright racist. Alex was a weak character and seemed to have no pride at all. Why would he want to stay in a town where people treated him like dirt. These racist pigs were no prize. Just because the setting was in the 1940's, doesn't mean that everyone held to racist beliefs. I get it, it was a small white town, but even still this was a book about deep seeded hatred for anyone who was non white. How could Lonnie, the minister, and Alex not be completely mortified and turned off by their community? I felt like the book was written from the perspective of there being a war with Japan, and therefor there was anti Japanese sentiment which unfortunately caused Alex to suffer unnecessary persecution. So here is the million dollar question If Alex were in fact Japanese, would it have been OK to treat him that way? Of course not! But the book never establishes this. Its like, "hey, don't treat Alex mean, he's not a "Jap" he's Korean!" I Also feel the book is portraying Alex to be smitten with the white woman (as if she is the prize). Alex continually has to bend and bow to these people and then apologize for being frustrated. It's rather sickening to read. So much so that I can't even finish the book. Even the cover is disturbing, showing Alex holding tight to Lonnie (with his Asian face conveniently hidden) and Lonnie not holding on to Alex, but looking rather uncomfortable. Everything about this book grates against me. And just for the record, you cant be a nice respectable person, and turn a blind eye racism and persecution.
I really loved this story. It brought to life an aspect of the WWII era that I wasn't familiar with. Well written and well paced.
It was hard to put down! I didn't want to do anything else except finish the story and see how it turned out!
This is a well written, gripping tale of forbidden love in the backdrop of WWII era race relations. Historically accurate and beautifully told, this book will not leave you disappointed. Highly recommended.
It's hard to think of WWII, and all the problems over in Europe in that time period but what about the issues right in the good USA? If you were Asian, you were most likely treated like dirt, felt so bad for Alex in this story. This is a story anyone can read, it's a good history lesson.
This book was a delight to read! Wonderful story that was difficult to put down. Include it on your must read list.
Well developed characters that were fun and relatable.
Details in the story were well researched too!

Alex and Lonnie's stories are also applicable today. At several points in the book, I was asking myself if the author was really writing about WWII era. So much of their experience is relevant and relatable now.
